School ID LSS
School Name Law And Security Studies
Philosopy Law operates on facts of life while security prospers on the preventive and investigative capacity of society to predict and prevent security breeches to life and property. It also provides an intuitive and deductive follow-up investigation to any cases of security violation and crime before critical evidence is tampered with, deteriorate to a state of non-reliability or disappear. A study of law without a knowledge of underlying social factors will produce a knowledge of abstract or ?non-living law?. Consequently, the LL.B. and B.Sc. degree programs contain not only law courses, but also such relevant non-law courses designed to produce a better understanding of the functions and functioning of law in society; especially in the economic and management disciplines as well as psychology, forensics and security. The aim is to produce law graduates who will be able to place legal ordering within the proper perspective of societal needs in the light of social, cultural, economic, political and technological advancement. Consequently, the curriculum includes non-legal courses that are of particular relevance to the understanding of the interplay between norms of decision on the part of the legal administrators and norms of action on the part of individual members of society. Within the context of legal courses, deliberate effort has been made to cover branches of the law which have been hitherto neglected but which the reality of contemporary social needs and foreseeable future exigencies have made desirable. Even in respect of specific courses the contents must be enriched in the light of contemporary development in social problem and legal thoughts. Examples of such additional courses include Gender Law, Environmental Law, Press and Electronic Media and Intellectual Properties Law, Planning Law, Petroleum and Energy Law and Comparative Law. The purpose of adding an impressive number of non-law courses is to equip the law graduate with wide knowledge of the environment within which the law operates and thereby enable them to employ legal rules as instrument for the solution of changing political, economic and socio-cultural problems impacting on security in the society. The program will aspire to bring the law graduate to the equivalent of a graduate who subsequently undertakes legal studies as a mature student. No direct entry provisions are therefore entertained in the Bu Faculty of Law and Security Studies. The Law program is based on the credit units system. Overall, it wills a qualitative and liberal legal education of international standard, comparable to advanced Western legal systems and yet relevant to the real and felt needs of the African society in general. Babcock University Law graduates will be ably equipped to pursue higher studies in the Law Faculties of any English or French speaking country the world over.
Vision A Law program at Babcock would be trite if it is conceived as a gap-filling measure to augment the ailing capacity of the over 30 existing training centers for lawyers in the country in response to popular demands. Rather, faithful to BU raison d?etre, the University wishes to respond to even more desperate and crying needs of society for a focused, purposeful and moral formation and reformation of a new breed of legal practitioners and legally equipped security industry against a backdrop of general insecurity in a post-military civil society. These needs are glaring in every sphere of Nigerian public life ? civil, criminal, constitutional and economy related matters. Babcock University would therefore provide opportunity for Christ-minded young people to make a difference in their practice at the Bar, the Bench or as legal and security officers in the public and private sectors.
Mission The Law and Security Studies programs are established to provide highly ethical Christian professional training (preventive, protective, investigate, and scientific) in all branches of the Legal profession and the security environment within which they operate.
Objectives Babcock University Law graduates will be ably equipped to pursue higher studies in the Law Faculties of any English or French speaking country the world over.
